This is Kendra. She knocked on my door today - she sells artwork. She had a bunch of works in her car of varying quality. Found a couple of extremely unexciting "goals" prints which is perfectly suited for your Human Resources office. Maybe pick one of those up if you've been slacking at work? Being more than a bit picky, I surprisingly found something I liked - a very fabulous print of Jimi Hendrix. Yeah, I know, I am sure most of you are wondering if I am still in college... but it's a really really cool piece. And no, Michele was not a big fan and assigned the piece to my photography room. Oh well. So, I agreed to buy it only if she volunteered for my strangers project. As a true saleswoman, she happily volunteered. She's actually not a stranger to posing - she's done modeling before, including a shoot for wedding hair & make up. She's only 21 and is working hard to gain enough momentum to start her own sales branch. She's got a great demeanor and I am sure she will reach her goal in no time.

This is Elizabeth. She cheerily volunteered for the Strangers project only to claim her extreme discomfort in front of the camera...I think she did good. She's a native of Long Island but has been in NC for quite some time now. She graduated from NC State where she was on the swim team. Claim to fame: Shared the water with one of the greatest Olympians of all time, Michael Phelps. Well, they participated in the same competition while in college. This is Lily. I was visiting my favorite bartender today (http://tinyurl.com/3soh3p2) and he recruited Lily for my strangers project. She's a bubbly & smiley waitress at Five Star. By the way, Five Star has a pretty funny tagline: "hide your cats". Yupp, Five Star is a Chinese restaurant. Lily is from Mexico City and moved to the U.S. at 14 years old. She's worked at Five Star for 10 years and she (along with her husband) is opening up their own place next month. It's a Tequila and Empanada bar. Being a Tequila affectionado, this came as very exciting news to me. They will feature regular Tequila tastings and will serve an eclectic variety of empanadas. I can't wait to visit!

This is Frank. He works as a bartender at one of my favorite restaurants/bar - Busy Bee. When he's not bartending, he's writing, usually fiction, with healthy dose of social commentary. He actually has a typewriter tattooed on his chest. You can see the top of it in the picture. Frank's got an interesting background - he was born in Botoga, Columbia and his mom is Nicaraguan and his dad is American (he was stationed in Bogata with the U.S. military). As many military kids in the States, he's lived many places, including Reston, VA and West Point, NY. He knows his beer, wine and liquor very well and it's all from experience at the ripe age of 26...makes me wonder how he stays in such great shape. He says it's because of high metabolism from being a high school wrestler...hmmm...let's see when he hits mid 30s ;) A couple of years ago, he traveled to Cape Town, South Africa to explore his passion for wine and he ended up stayed for an entire year. He estimates he visited around 80-90 vineyard while visiting. Nice to know that I am in good hands while maneuvering through the maze of Busy Bee's very extensive selections.

Spotted a Shelby Cobra on my way to the gym. Can't tell you how immaculately this car was cared for...spotless, scratch-free and extremely masculine. It was parked outside a British car show area which I found ironic because I walked around the car show for quite a while and couldn't find anything remotely as attractive as this (no offense to my British friends). Wouldn't mind cruising around in a car like this...oh well...I am getting a scooter shortly, that'll have to suffice for now. I know a certain someone who will appreciate this shot...hope you like it!

This is JR from Ohio. He's a pharma rep in town for new product training (a pretty intense 3 week course). JR is definitely a type A individual with an obsession to do and learn as much as possible at all times. He decided to get into a pharma after reading a packet insert (those wordy drug descriptions that explains its side effects, studies conducted etc). He found them fascinating and realized he would make a great rep considering his propensity to master new concepts. When he's not working, you'll find him remodeling homes, mountainbiking, playing sports (he was a RB and safety in college), working out, hiking etc. He's constantly on the move and so is his mind. As we were talking, he became preoccupied with the tile on the floor on which we were standing...he pointed out that out that it wasn't cut right. He wouldn't do it that way...he's always thinking about a better way to do things. A couple of years back (while camping), he had the idea to create a sleeping bag that inflates like an air mattress; it would be convenient to have it all in one. He didn't follow through on his idea and a few years later, he saw the exact same idea conceptualized and on sale in the Sky Mall magazine...

This is Toni from Atlanta. Like JR, she is a pharma rep in town for new product training. I can see why she's a successful rep - she's always smiling and has a very disarming personality. She also is a bit of a type A person which is certainly an advantageous trait in sales. I asked her if she think an overachieving personality is due to nature or nurture and she definitely believes it nature. She showed signs of her competitive spirit as early as third grade when she entered "Invent America" with her "stay put doggy bowl". It's basically a bowl with suction cups that keeps it in place. For a third grader, that's pretty impressive. In fact, my pup Mella could use one of those.

She loves to push herself mentally and physically. For example, her goals right now are to become fluent in at least 4 languages and to travel the world. I know, it may seem cliche but after spending some time with Toni, I am a believer that she will actually accomplish her goals. Being away from home for 3 weeks, I asked her who she misses the most while away, and it's her nephew who's about to turn three. I am curious how her boyfriend feels about that....

This is Sean. Ran into him today while walking around downtown. Originally from Florida, Sean has lived here for 16 years now (it seems as though no one is actually from Raleigh). He is just as friendly and outgoing as he appears. Fittingly, Sean bartends at Busy Bee, a very popular restaurant with a great selection of beer. Draft Magazine included them in their 100 America's Best Beer Bars. Being a beer lover, I embarrassingly had to admit that I had never visited his establishment. When he isn't working, you'll probably find Sean painting. Painting is his passion and he holds a couple of shows a year to show off his work - I will definitely make sure to visit next time. He's also planning a little business venture with a friend. A lemonade stand. Yepp, that's right. He's planning on having a band playing live music next to the stand as well. Considering Sean is a bartender, I imagine it won't be your average "lemonade" stand. Sean is #29 in my 100 Strangers project.

This is what she would do all day if she could. I work from home and I normally I just open the door to our yard where she plops down to bask in the sun. The days of free roaming around the house are gone. She ran away earlier this week. When I walked out to bring her back in, she was gone. She has never ran away before. As most westies, she's terribly needy for companionship and doesn't enjoy being alone or far away from us. Obviously, I panicked and threw myself on my bike to canvas the neighborhood. It didn't take long for me to spot her. A neighbor up the street was standing with her on a leash, keeping an eye out for anyone looking for a free spirited westie. Mella was completely unfazed, just sitting on there, howling a little bit and wagging her tail. She was found a block away, strolling the sidewalk of a busy street with fast moving cars. I was so incredibly relieved. I couldn't imagine anything happening to this little princess. I'm definitely not letting her out of my sight anymore. Her sunbasking is now under strict monitoring.

This is Antonio. I ran into him today while on route to the gym. He had just finished up his workout and was leaving but was kind enough to let me take a few shots of him. He caught my attention because, to me, he looks like a character from the "Madchester" scene (a hip music scene in Manchester in the late 80s). Perhaps a member of Joy Division or Happy Mondays. His heritage is interesting to say the least with a Cuban mother and a Hungarian father. Turns out he is not a member of a hip band but a professor at Duke University where he teaches American literature and psychoanalysis which certainly impressed this psych major. He got his Phd from University of Pennsylvania in English and has authored several books.

This is Seth. I met Seth today during Walk MS which is an event aimed at raising money to end Multiple Sclerosis. Seth and my wife work together and when the sign up sheet for the event circulated her office, we excitedly volunteered. Seth, who is diagnosed with MS, is a true southerner and it was sometimes hard for me to understand everything he was saying because his "twang" was quite vibrant. However, there was no mistaking his extremely positive and infectiously cheery demeanor. The man always has a smile on his face. I had a great time at the event and I will definitely meet up with Seth and his friends next year. Why the orange hair? It's the signature color of the MS Society. Even Mella, our Westie, was sporting an orange coat. Approximately 400,000 Americans have MS and every week about 200 people are diagnosed. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system (the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord). It is thought to be an autoimmune disorder. This is Jill. She's the manager of the hair salon where I get my hair cut. As Micah (pictured below), she also bartends at Five Star which is a great Asian restaurant with a couple of wicked good dishes, such as their heat seeker shrimp. When asked what she does on her free time, she replied: "what free time?". Not too much of a surprise considering a day and night time job. I really like this salon, it's perfectly decorated, is eco friendly and they offer you tea, beer or wine while you wait. I may show up an hour early next time ;) Jill is #26 in my 100 strangers project.

This is Micah. He not only cuts my hair but he also serves as my local culture and entertainment compass. When he doesn't style hair, he works as a bartender and he definitely knows his way around town and has given me some great advice on everything from farmers markets to bourbon bars. I normally don't love having to chit chat while getting my hair cut but Micah is a solid guy and I actually look forward to my visits. Micah wasn't too keen on having his photo taken but he finally (and reluctantly) agreed. This picture is #25 in my 100 strangers project.
